3 Local Animal Shelters To Host Tucson ‘Mega’ Pet Adoption Event

TUCSON, AZ – The Pima Animal Care Center, Humane Society of Southern Arizona and Hermitage No-Kill Cat Shelter and Sanctuary are uniting for a Tucson ‘mega’ pet adoption event Oct. 18-20, with the goal of having 600 animals adopted that weekend.

Though joined in a common cause, the “Tucson Shelters United” event occurs at each of the three organizations’ separate locations that weekend, giving animal lovers more choices. Thousands of pets will be eligible for adoption at the event, and the three shelters are each giving a 50 percent discount on their organization’s adoption fees that weekend on animals who are 4 months or older.

Here’s what you need to know about going to any of the three shelters for the event.

Pima Animal Care Center

PACC is home to children’s activities, music, food and more Oct. 18-20. The shelter will hold a “Freaky Friday Foster Fair” Oct. 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. where human visitors can meet animals who are currently in foster care and find out more about how to become foster parents.

On Oct. 19, PACC hosts their “Spooky Saturday” happenings for young kids and their families. Slated activities are a classic car trunk-or-treat, carnival games and a movie. Anyone adopting a pet at PACC that day will be eligible for PACC pumpkin patch discounts.

Sunday, Oct. 20, PACC highlights its longest-term animal residents at its “Sleeper Hit Sunday” event. Activities from 10 a.m. to noon include a pancake brunch, then a Longstay Parade at 1 p.m. in the facility’s breezeway. Select long-timer pet adopters will receive gift bags. PACC will additionally have food trucks at their shelter all weekend.

Humane Society of Southern Arizona

Throughout the weekend, visitors can meet the Humane Society's longest-term residents, whose adoption fees are covered by the shelter Oct. 18-20. Attendees can also learn how to become a dog walker, and visitors will enjoy food, children’s activities and music in genres such as country, blues, folk and bluegrass.

The Humane Society will also present a “Foster Fair Friday” Oct. 18, and, like PACC, will introduce fostered animals to people and give humans the opportunity to learn how they can become foster parents. At 6:30 p.m. that evening, the Humane Society also hosts a free “Sounds for Hounds” concert in the courtyard.

Randy Peterson, development director at the Humane Society, explained why the weekend’s event might be more conducive to pet adoptions. “This is a great chance for families to come and enjoy some live music and meet our long-term pets in an even more natural environment,” he wrote in a media statement.

Hermitage No-Kill Cat Shelter and Sanctuary

The weekend of Oct. 18-20 at the Hermitage shelter includes activities similar to those at PACC and the Humane Society such as music, food and children’s activities. On Oct. 18, the Hermitage shelter also brings a “Foster Fair Friday” where fostered animals and people get acquainted and humans can learn more about how to become foster parents to help reduce shelter overcrowding. Hermitage’s Executive Director Karen Baden explained how. “Without foster parents helping to expand the shelter walls, we could never save so many lives. Foster parents help us by protecting the most vulnerable kittens,” she wrote. Oct. 18 at the shelter also includes a door prize and raffle baskets in addition to “Cat Enthusiast” merchandise.

Then on Oct. 19 and 20, the Hermitage presents more raffle prizes. The shelter will additionally host a Halloween-themed pet adoption special, “Candy Corn and Peanut Butter Kisses,” providing a $10 adoption fee discount on orange and black cats.
