8 Things To Do In Tucson On Labor Day 2019

Sometimes it seems most everything is closed on Labor Day, but these 8 Tucson events and activities give residents some choices on Sept. 2.

TUCSON, AZ – With so many businesses and organizations’ offices closed on Labor Day, Tucson is still in holiday-happenings mode on Labor Day, this Monday, Sept. 2. Here are 8 events and activities to consider for that day:

Make It Mondays!, presented by the Children’s Museum Tucson, 9 a.m., 200 S. 6th Ave., Tucson. Labor Day’s Make It Mondays! topic is "Brain STEM." At 9:30 a.m., preschoolers age 4 and younger can participate in the Museum’s Wee Play, a literacy program including reading, singing and laughter. At 3 p.m., the Museum hosts its Clothes Pin Dragonflies. The Museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Labor Day general admission is $3. (520) 792-9985.

YGO (Yu-Gi-Oh) Win-A-Box Tournament, noon to 5 p.m., Showtime (ST) Games and Comics, 5801 E. Speedway Blvd., Tucson. Quantities of prizes and the number of rounds will increase as tournament attendance does. Each entry brings four more prize pool packs. $15 entry fee. (520) 296-5512.

Dog Days of Summer, 10 a.m., Old Tucson, 201 Kinney Road, Tucson. Pro dogs will be participating in competitions involving speed, distance and height, and local dogs can participate too in the competition’s “amateur” class. Registration for local amateur dogs in the competitions is held onsite and ranges from $15 to $30. Attendees can view the competition heats and times for Labor Day. Amateur contest registration is $15 to $30. Additionally, pet adoptions happen at the event, and bins will be onsite for donations of pet food and used and new pet supplies. Adult admission is $19.95, with discounted rates for Pima County residents, seniors and military. Every admission fee paid generates $1 for Cody’s Friends.

Labor Day Warrior Training Camp, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Playformance, 119 E. Toole Ave., Tucson. Ages 5 and older join together for a camp providing combat play, obstacle course training and parkour. Pre- and post-event childcare available. $70 per child. Access this page to register. (520) 623-3904.

Sugar & the Mint bluegrass band, 6 p.m., The Gaslight Theatre, 7010 E. Broadway Blvd., Tucson. Telluride Bluegrass Festival competition winners Sugar & the Mint bring a multi-genre performance with originals and songs from AC/DC, Robert Johnson and Bill Monroe. 49th Annual Saguaro National Park Labor Day Run, race starts at 6:25 a.m., packet pickup is also Sept. 2, from 5:15 to 6:15 a.m. at Saguaro National Park East. Registration will not be held on race day, but preregistration can be completed at azroadrunners.org. Includes option for either a 5K run/walk ($40 per person) or an 8-mile race ($50 per person). Labor Day Community Bash, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tucson Jewish Community Center, 3800 E. River Road, Tucson. The party is open to all community members and all ages and features a live DJ, bouncy house, pool games, inflatables and more. Labor Day is free day at the JCC, so before and after the bash, the community can use the JCC's fitness center, tennis courts and indoor playspace at no cost. (520) 299-3000.

Kitt Peak National Observatory tours, top of route 386 on the Tohono O’odham Nation. On Labor Day, the observatory is open 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and will hold these tours: the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope tour at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and the 2.1-Meter Telescope tour at 11:30 a.m. Daytime guided tour prices vary depending on age and number of tours per day.
