TUCSON, AZ – Labor Day this Monday, Sept. 2, marks the 125th national anniversary of the holiday, celebrating American workers’ economic and social achievements and the working force’s contributions to the prosperity and strength of the U.S. When Labor Day became a national holiday, it traditionally included a parade to show the public the trade and labor organizations’ strength, a tradition that faded as the impracticality of holding annual Labor Day parades won out, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

These days, instead, for some, Labor Day conjures a craving for the sizzle of hotdogs, hamburgers or veggie burgers, and French fries on the grill. For others, an outdoor picnic or throwing a frisbee in a park while keeping dogs and children close are favorite Labor Day activities. Still more "indoorsy" others might prefer stepping into the altered reality of a mall movie theater for a couple hours, while some might enjoy a thorough power-shopping session. To plan the day, here’s what Tucson area residents venturing out this Labor Day need to know about what is open/closed in Tucson:

For those considering adopting a pet, the Pima Animal Care Center and the Humane Society of Southern AZ are both closed on Labor Day.
