Press release from the Fox Tucson Theatre:

As summer heats up, so does exciting programming for kids at the Fox Tucson Theatre under the KIT (Kids in the Theatre) program. While various youth performing arts groups are warming up with workshops and other chances to practice their art at the theatre, the Midsummer Literacy Event will take center stage on Saturday, June 26 with two showings, the first from 10:30am to 11:30am and the second from 1:30pm to 2:30pm. Produced in cooperation with the Pima County Library, the Friends of the Pima County Library, Stories That Soar and Literacy Connects, the event is recommended for ages 3 to 9. KIT Youth Arts and Culture director Jordan Wiley-Hill wants to encourage all family members to join in the fun. “This event is an entertaining, safe and enriching opportunity for families to gather indoors again. The hour-long free event will include live entertainment, movies and book giveaways for the kids - literacy brought to life!”.

At the event, the Pima County Library will offer free books for kids to take home, and the Friends of the Library will provide ‘coupons’ for free books at their book sales. Kit the Fox will lead everyone in song and dance and introduce a collection of movies created by Stories that Soar (based on the creative writings of local students) on the big screen. The feature movie will be the award- winning animation “The Snail and the Whale” (2019), a thirty-minute tale of an unlikely friendship, a joyous tour of the world’s natural wonders, and a heroic rescue that reminds us that even the smallest beings can make a difference. The movie was based on a book of the same name, written by the legendary children’s book duo, Julia Donaldson (writer) and Axel Scheffler (illustrator), who also wrote The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom, and The Gruffalo’s Child. Support for the Midsummer Literacy Events has been provided by The Stocker Foundation.

Fox Executive Director Bonnie Schock is looking forward to seeing the theatre come alive again. “Families have always been a core component of our programming at the Fox. As we gradually reopen, we are excited to provide a safe, fun adaptation of our annual summer literacy event, welcoming kids and their adults back to the Fox”.
