Phoenix, Glendale, Tucson Among Most Deadly Intersections In U.S.

A recent industry report ranks Glendale and Phoenix the No. 1 and No. 2 U.S. cities for intersection fatalities. Tucson was No. 17.

PHOENIX – A recently released industry research report by autoinsurance.org ranks Glendale and Phoenix as the No. 1 and No. 2 U.S. cities with the most intersection fatalities from 2011 to 2017. Tucson and Paradise Valley also appeared in the top 25 list, ranking No. 17 and No. 22 respectively. The report is based primarily on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data for 2011 through 2017, with those years representing the latest data available.

Inside the report’s timeframe, Glendale’s No. 1 intersection fatalities ranking was attributed to 218 deaths, while Phoenix’s No. 2 ranking points to its 197 intersection fatalities within the same years. Tucson’s No. 17 ranking is linked to its 83 intersection fatalities, while Paradise Valley’s No. 22 ranking was associated with 80 intersection deaths.

Additionally, in 2014, Phoenix and Glendale tied for most dangerous U.S. cities for intersection deaths. In 2015 and 2016, Glendale was most dangerous; however, Phoenix ranked No. 1 in intersection fatalities in 2017.

Maricopa County was ranked the No. 2 deadliest U.S. county overall with 1,134 intersection fatalities from 2011 to 2017, beaten only by the No. 1 seated Los Angeles County with 1,891 intersection deaths in the same timespan. Florida’s Miami-Dade County came in at No. 3 with 1,009 fatalities. When Deadliest Counties Per 100K People were tabulated for the report, however, no Arizona counties appeared on that top 10 list.
