Pima Animal Care Center Holds ‘5 Bucks A Cluck” Adoption Special

With a "managed intake" of 60 owner-surrendered hens and chickens underway, PACC is offering a '5 Bucks a Cluck' chicken adoption special.

TUCSON – The Pima Animal Care Center in Tucson is holding a “5 Bucks a Cluck” adoption special for about 60 chickens needing new homes. The roosters and hens are part of the shelter’s “managed intake” of a Pima County residence's owner-surrendered birds, a process that began Tuesday. Now PACC is offering a discounted $5 adoption fee per chicken, and an individual can adopt anywhere from one to five of the fowls.

“It’s not often where we have so many chickens available to adopt,” said Kristen Hassen-Auerbach, Director of Animal Services in a media statement. “We get some in from time to time, but not this many at once. Our shelter is already stretched pretty thin taking care of the hundreds of pets that have come in over the last couple weeks.” People can help lighten’s the shelter’s load by adopting a cat, dog or chicken, she added.

Those interested in adopting a chicken should start by emailing Michele.Figueroa@pima.gov. Additionally, adopters will need to bring a carrier from home for the chicken.

The birds are just some of the 118 pets PACC accepted Tuesday, and the shelter houses 774 adoptable pets at the moment. The shelter additionally has another 890 animals presently being fostered who are adoptable too. Those interested in becoming a foster can either send an email to PACC.foster@pima.gov or visit PACC during business hours.

One way to see and meet the animals in the shelter and in foster care is to attend the Tucson Shelters United “mega" adoption event this Friday-Sunday Oct. 18-20 at PACC, the Hermitage No-Kill Cat Shelter and the Humane Society in Tucson. The event happens at each of the three shelters' locations and provides discounted pet adoption rates that vary by shelter.
