Sun Tran To Continue Fare-Free Rides Through December
Tucson's Sun Tran system, including buses, the Sun Link streetcar and more, will not charge for fares through December, the city said.
TUCSON, AZ — Tucson's Sun Tran public transportation system will remain fare-free through December.
The service, which includes Sun Tran bus routes, the Sun Link streetcar, Sun Van, Sun On Demand and Sun Shuttle, have not charged fares since March 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The city's announcement said the reasoning behind continuing to offer free rides stemmed from wanting to make public transportation an affordable option for all city residents.

"The move was an effort to avoid crowding at the farebox and to provide some fiscal relief to riders during a challenging economic environment," Sun Tran's statement reads. "Federal grant money was used to cover the loss in revenue up to this point. While budget planning for fiscal year 2022, the Mayor and City Council members affirmed free transit service is a priority."
