Tucson Extends Mask Mandate In Spite of Gov. Doug Ducey's Order

TUCSON, AZ — The city of Tucson will continue to enforce its mask mandate in defiance of Gov. Doug Ducey's order Thursday.

The city's existing mask order was put in place on June 30 and is exempt from the governor's order under the Tucson charter, the city said in a news release. The governor does not have the authority to unilaterally strip away local authority to enact items authorized by Tucson's charter, the city said.

Tucson's mask mandate requires all residents over the age of 5 to cover their nose and mouth when in public. Businesses can enact and enforce their own regulations and deny service to customers who don't comply, the city said.

The city's mask mandate will still be enforced inside all city building and on public transit.
