Altadena Mountain Rescue Team, Sheriff Hike With At-Risk Youth
The March 30 outing to Rubio Canyon was part of the Vital Intervention and Directional Alternatives (VIDA) program.
Twenty-four at-risk students, many of whom had never been out of the city or ventured into a forest before, hiked Rubio Canyon Saturday to learn about forest safety, the importance of a hiking plan, and what to expect while hiking, the Altadena Mountain Rescue Team shared on its blog.
The youth are part of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's VIDA (Vital Intervention and Directional Alternatives) program and were led by AMRT, VIDA deputies from the Altadena and Temple stations and several volunteers.
“Many of the students were concerned about the recent death in Eaton Canyon” and “saw first-hand how treacherous, steep, and crumbly the mountain is just off trail,” AMRT shared.
