Big Rig Fire Spreads, Shutting Down 5 Freeway

A big rig fire caused rush hour headaches Wednesday on the 5 Freeway in Castaic where the blaze spread to nearby brush.

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Golden State (5) Freeway has reopened after a Big Rig fire spread to the brush alongside the Golden State (5) Freeway and shut down the freeway in both directions in Castaic Wednesday evening.

The northbound lanes were closed at Lake Hughes Road, and the southbound lanes were closed at Smokey Bear Road, according to Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol. The fire broke out around 3:30 p.m. and triggered a quarter-acre brush fire.

The fire forced the California Highway Patrol to shut down the freeway, and Los Angeles County and National Forest Service crews battled to extinguish the blaze, getting it under control by 4:20 p.m., however, the freeway remained closed an hour later.
