Committee To Discuss Memorial For Owen Brown Gravesite

ALTADENA, CA — A county-sponsored effort has been underway since 2019 to preserve and establish a gravesite memorial to an abolitionist buried in Altadena.

A committee comprised of members from the Altadena Town Council, Altadena Heritage and local residents regularly meet every two weeks to discuss the creation of a memorial site called the "Owen Brown Gravesite." The committee's next meeting is scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. where members are set to discuss the gravesite's plans and the historic preservation that would need to be done.

Meetings are currently conducted online, a copy of the agenda and a link to the meeting can be found on the L.A. County Department of Regional Planning's website.

Owen Brown was the son of abolitionist leader John Brown, who led the raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia, according to the Pasadena Star-News. Brown also took part in the raid and, after its failure, became a fugitive for several years before settling in Pasadena.

Owen Brown died at the age of 64 of pneumonia and was buried in Altadena near a cabin he owned, the paper reported.
