Highway 2 Art Show seeks art, artists

Multi-media, multi-artist show celebrates the Angeles Crest Highway from La Canada to Wrightwood and includes a number of events

Artworks of all mediums which depict the experience of the Angeles Crest Highway from La Canada Flintridge to Wrightwood, and all the points it reaches in between, are being sought for the third presentation of Highway 2 - the journey and the destination. The deadline for submitting artistic samples by email is November 1. All artists are welcome to submit work; prior gallery experience is not a requirement. Submissions should be sent to redbirds_vision@hotmail.com with the words Highway 2 in the title.

Painting, photography, textile work made with forest products, two and three dimensional original artworks of all artistic styles are welcome. The goal of the show is to bring together the many ways people relate to the Angeles National Forest and the two lane strip of asphalt that plies its rugged terrain.

The show has other goals as well, such as environmental education and highway safety. Two workshops will be held in conjunction with the show - in January, a photographic journey across the region with fire photographer Jeff Zimmerman, Forest Recovery Project photographer Corina Roberts and Transition Habitat Conservancy photographer Wendy Walker. Each artist will present their images while discussing such relevant topics as our changing climate, the "new normal" of wildfire behavior, natural recovery and the importance of keeping open spaces intact and accessible to people.

On March 4, a motorcycle technical skills workshop will be held dealing specifically with the challenges of riding on the Crest; a road requiring a high level of skill, quick reflexes and excellent judgement.

The show will be held at the Oldtown Newhall Library in Santa Clarita, opening on December 12, 2016 and closing April 12, 2017. After a brief break, a second opening is being sought for the Big Pines Lodge in Wrightwood, coinciding with the re-opening of the highway after what everyone is praying will be a wet winter in the Angeles.

Weather permitting, opening night (Monday, December 12) will include a people's choice motorcycle show on the veranda of the library's community room. There is room for about twenty motorcycles on the veranda; show co-sponsors can reserve a space for their entries - the remaining spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Opening night will also host a screening of L.A.'s Hidden Places - Newcomb's Ranch, by Pavel Suslov and Kseniya Yakubova.

Highway 2 - the journey and the destination is hosted by the non profit association Redbird and sponsored in 2016 by the City of Santa Clarita, Newcomb's Ranch Bar and Restaurant and Deb and Randy Buckler of Resins by Randy. Additional sponsorships are welcome and encouraged; the production of the show and related events will be funded entirely through sponsorships and donations. Unlike most gallery shows, there is no entry fee; donations, however, are greatly appreciated, particularly if artists choose to have their work transported to and from the show by Redbird.

Artists preferring to drop their work off at the show site must do so on Monday, December 12 before noon. The show will be hung Monday afternoon with the opening on Monday evening. Artists who wish to attend the opening celebration may want to take advantage of a weekend drop-off in La Canada.

The full show schedule follows.
