Altadena Captain John Benedict confirmed the sightings to Patch Thursday morning and said station officials did not see any of the reported bears.

The Altadena Sheriff’s Station notified the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

“We haven’t really seen any bears in the last few months,” Benedict told Patch Thursday, noting he was unsure as to why Altadena bear sightings have happened in the last two days.

It is unclear if the bear spotted eating trash Thursday was eating from a bear-proof trash can, Benedict said.

Altadena local Alice Wessen previously shared with Patch her experience with bears cracking open her supposed “bear-proof” trash cans and eating their contents.

Athens Services has a new and improved bear-proof trash can for residents in certain bear-heavy areas of Altadena.
