City Council Giving Thrift Store a Second Chance to Open on Live Oak

The planning commission denied Savers Thrift Superstore's permit application in June but the City Council will hear an appeal to the decision Tuesday night.

The Arcadia City Council will hear an appeal from Savers Thrift Superstore in its bid to open on Live Oak Avenue after the planning commission denied the company a conditional use permit in June.

City staff is recommending that the thrift store's appeal be upheld after the planning commission voted 3-2 on June 11 to deny to company's permit request because of concerns that the store would attract illegal dumping and scavenging at the 42,000 square foot building located at 16 E. Live Oak Avenue, according to a city council agenda report.

In its appeal, the thrift store chain promised to install a security camera or hire an overnight security guard if dumping becomes an issue at the site, which was previously occupied by a Ralph's grocery store, according to the report. City staff recommends that the council approve the company's amended application.

Savers relies on donations from the community and the donation center would be located at the front of the building. It has four other locations throughout Southern California.
