Filming in Arcadia: Television Projects Increase Production Activity in Third Quarter

FilmL.A. released figures today showing an increase in production activity for the third quarter.

ARCADIA, CA — The Botanical Gardens could be the most frequent Arcadia location for television and movie productions. According to recent reports, in Los Angeles television project increased in production this year.

In Los Angeles county, television projects drove an increase in production activity with shoot days inching up 3 percent in the third quarter, compared with the same period last year, according to FilmL.A. figures released today.

The Los Angeles area saw 9,795 total shoot days, or SDs, between July to September. Of that, 4,233 SDs were for television productions, a 2.7 percent increase.

Other types of productions did not fare as well, with feature film production down 5 percent to 1,089 SDs and commercials falling 2.6 percent to 1,245 SDs.

Reality, web-based and pilot production activity contributed to the television increases this past quarter, according to FilmL.A. officials.

After six quarters of declines, reality television finally saw a 6.6 percent increase in activity to 1,342 SDs, while web-based television shot up 72.2 percent to 651 SDs. Television pilot activity was up 20.8 percent to 151 days.

Those gains offset the declines in television drama and comedy production. Comedy was down 13.3 percent to 646 production days and drama production was flat, with a slight 0.3 percent drop to 1,183 SDs.

A fourth of the television drama and comedy productions qualified for state incentives, propping up the overall television numbers, according to FilmL.A. officials.

Among the projects that qualified for incentives are "American Horror Story," which previously left the state for a season when the show failed to qualify for incentives that year, and "Scream Queens," which relocated to Los Angeles. Other shows that qualified for incentives include "Crazy Ex- Girlfriend," "I'm Dying Up Here," "Pitch," "This is Us" and "Westworld."
