Forbes Best Employers: California Companies Make 2019 List
Forbes has released its annual list of the best employers in America. See which California companies made the top rankings.
The popular grocery store Trader Joe’s was ranked the No.1 employer in the United States for 2019, according to Forbes’ annual list. The rankings released Wednesday name the 500 best large employers in America and many California companies made the Forbes’ list.
In a profile on Trader Joe’s, Forbes writes that the Monrovia, California-based company has been rising steadily on its list, finally reaching the top spot this year after coming in second place in 2018. The magazine writes that the grocery store’s “consistent attention to the basics may be the secret to its success.”
Forbes also notes that Trader Joe’s establishes unique base wages for each market and offers access to benefits to part-time and full-time workers.

For the America’s Best Employers 2019 list, Forbes partnered with the research firm Statista, surveying 30,000 Americans working for businesses with at least 1,000 employees.
According to Forbes, if California were a country, our $2.9 trillion economy would be the fifth biggest in the world, ranked between Germany and the United Kingdom. California also ranks as 14% of the U.S. economy.

In California, three of the top ten best employers are headquartered in California, including Trader Joe’s, Google and Stanford University.
The top 10 employers on Forbes’ 2019 list are:

- Southwest Airlines
- Lilly
- Costco Wholesale
- Garmin
- Stanford University
- SC Johnson
- Mayo Clinic
- Michelin Group
