Mon Cheri

I can remember when my son was going to school at Dana middle school years ago. One day he came home and was explaining to me how one of his teachers spoke about a situation that taught the class to always be aware of their surroundings.

I thought about that wisdom as I walked out of the post office on Wheeler Ave yesterday. Glancing over a few yards to the left as I walked out towards the parking lot I noticed some unique items against the wall close to a doorway on the sidewalk. Curiously, I walked over and realized that it was a new boutique and gift shop that I’d never seen before.

Warm, and welcoming, was Claire, the owner of Mon Cheri, a new store in town. I found it fascinating to listen to this young, enthusiastic woman from Taiwan speak about her passion to bring such a unique boutique into our Arcadia neighborhood.

As a young girl growing up in Taiwan she told me, it wasn’t the pictures of American homes that caught her eye, but rather the comfortable contents that filled them.

Her store reflects that concept and more. It reflects her warm qualities as well. Mon Cheri is filled with many fascinating arts and crafts. There are hand towels from India as well as tiny detailed handmade baskets. I loved the many different wall plaques and the sweet aroma from the soy candles, there is really something special and unique here for anyone.

I was surprised when Claire told me she has been opened for three whole months. Why didn’t I notice this store here before? Perhaps I wasn’t being aware of my surroundings, and the gifts that reside there, enhancing a unique space.
