Pretty Bird

Peahen in a liquor store.

I liked you better when you were smiling at me. There you stood with that big wide grin. It was obvious that I amazed you. I felt so flattered by the way you paused and admired me, telling me how beautiful I was.

Those kind words I really loved to hear; your energy was so calm as you peacefully strolled through the gardens.

At least, that’s the way you behaved in my habitat, you were so trusting and I couldn’t wait to share more of that beautiful energy.

So, I felt compelled to soak up some more of that good stuff. That’s why I moseyed into that liquor store thinking maybe we could bond again, right?

I must have sat quietly perched up there on the shelf for a good ten minutes glancing downward at the many humans walking in and out like they needed something fast. Then it happened, a human noticed me, and oh boy, here comes that love again!

“Aren’t I a pretty bird?”

“Oh, no, what's going on? A human is swishing a huge net at me like I’m a foreign species from humanville?"

“Hey it’s me, beautiful bird, you remember, don’t you?”

“Watch out for those bottles, that’s no place for that net!”

“Great, thankfully someone finally has a hold of me, I was hoping for that hug all along. It’s back to my home at the Arboretum I go.”

“Well, I can’t say it’s been sweet, in fact it was downright terrorizing. I don’t understand your world of anxiety and stress.”

I do know one thing for sure, you forgot the one thing that brought us together in the first place, it was such a beautiful experience. It's as if it's been lost and carelessly discarded, and yet it was here, right here, the entire time.
