3 Arrested in Fight with Weapons at People's Park

Three men fighting in People's Park with weapons – machete, fishing pole and a large metal pole with a hook – were interrupted and arrested by a UC Berkeley police officer who was driving by at the time, police said.

Three men fighting in People's Park Saturday with a machete, fishing rod and pole with a hook were all arrested after a UC Berkeley police officer happened upon the melee, police said.

At 12:17 p.m., police said in a crime alert, "a UCPD officer was driving by People's Park when she observed a large fight taking place in the middle of the park."

"The officer exited the vehicle and observed suspect #1 wielding a large machete," police said. "Suspect #2 was in possession of a handle of a fishing pole. The officer could see and hear that the two weapons were making contact. The officer also observed suspect #3 pick up a large metal pole with a hook on the end of it."

The officer ordered the trio to drop their weaponsn and they "reluctantly complied," police said. All three were taken into custody.

The man who had machete is 49 years old, 6-feet tall and weighs 180 pounds, police said. The man with the fishing pole is 26 years old, 5-feet 10-inches and 165 pounds, while the man with the pole and hook is 54, 5-feet 7-inches and 180 pounds.

Anyone with information about the crimes is urged to call UC Berkeley police at 510-642-0472 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., and 510-642-6760 at all other times.

Police also issued the following advice to anyone who witnesses a situation that may turn into a fight:

"If you see an incident that may turn into an altercation: Do not get involved in the fight and risk being injured. Report the incident to the police, who are equipped and trained to respond and deal with the situation."
