Berkeley Cell Phone Robberies Continue

The BPD crime narratives for Jan. 13—19 include two cell phone robberies.

The following items have been selected and written by the Berkeley Police Department. 

January 13

Residential Burglary, 1000 Block of Delaware Street: On Sunday, Jan. 13 between 2:35 p.m. and 2:55 p.m. a burglary occurred in the 1000 block of Delaware Street. The victim left his home for a short period of time. He returned and discovered an unknown suspect had entered his residence and stole his computer.  The suspect was able to gain entry to the home through and unlocked door.

January 14

Auto Burglary, 1700 Block of Spruce Street: On Monday, Jan. 14 between 6:30 p.m. and 6:50 p.m. an auto burglary occurred in the 1700 block of Spruce Street. The victim parked his vehicle on the street and went into his residence. The victim returned a short time later and discovered the vehicle window broken.  The unknown suspect stole the victim’s backpack containing a cell phone and IPad.

January 15

Auto Theft, Bay Street/Potter Street: On Tuesday, Jan. 15 at approximately 4:18 p.m. an unknown suspect stole a vehicle as it was parked near the intersection of Bay Street and Potter Street.  The victim reported parking and locking her vehicle. The unknown suspect stole her vehicle while she was rowing at Aquatic Park. The vehicle taken is a blue, 2011, Hyundai Elantra.

January 16

Robbery, Bancroft Way/McGee Street: On Wednesday, Jan. 16 at approximately 10 a.m. a robbery occurred near the intersection of Bancroft Way and McGee Street. The female victim was walking in the area when she was approached by the unknown suspect. The unknown suspect attempted to steal the victim’s cell phone. They struggled over the cell phone; the suspect was able to get the ear buds, but not the phone. The suspect then fled the area.

The suspect is described as:

“Black Male, 16-18 years old, 5’6” wearing a black baseball hat, black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.”

January 17

Robbery, Virginia Street/Sacramento Street: On Thursday, Jan. 17 at approx. 6 p.m., a robbery occurred near the intersection of Virginia and Sacramento Streets. The male victim was walking in the area when he was approached by two unknown suspects. The suspects forcibly stole the victim’s cell phone and wallet and pushed him to the ground.

The suspects are described as:

Suspect 1 – “Black Male juvenile, 15-17 years old, 5’9”-5’11”, 140-150 lbs wearing a black or gray hooded sweatshirt.”

Suspect 2 - “Black Male juvenile, 15-17 years old, 5’9”-5’11”, 140-150 lbs wearing a black or gray hooded sweatshirt.”

January 18

Commercial Burglary, 1900 Block of Addison Street: On Friday, Jan. 18 at approximately 10 a.m. an employee of a non-profit organization in the 1900 block of Addison Street discovered the business had been burglarized. The employee left the previous night at approximately 10:15 p.m., securing the business. She returned in the morning and discovered the door had been forced open and the business’ computers taken.  

January 19

Theft, 1600 Block of Shattuck Avenue: On Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013 between 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. an unknown suspect committed a theft inside a business in the 1600 block of Shattuck Avenue. The victim was inside the business and had set her purse down on the floor next to her. Her purse was left unattended for a moment and an unknown suspect stole her wallet.
