BERKELEY, CA — A 64-year-old Berkeley man died when a vehicle struck him in Newark last month, police said Monday.
The collision was reported at 8:26 p.m. on Sept. 29 on Newark Boulevard north of Cedar Boulevard.
The vehicle struck Michael Diehl, who was taken to a hospital and succumbed to his injuries there, police said.

The driver, a 36-year-old man from Pinole, stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, who do not believe drugs or alcohol are factors.
Police said the preliminary investigation determined Diehl entered the northbound lanes of Newark Boulevard outside of a crosswalk when the vehicle hit him.

Diehl was an activist for the homeless in Berkeley. The Berkeley City Council adjourned their Oct. 1 meeting in memory of him, calling him a former city commissioner and local activist.
