Berkeley's Online Parking Permit System Launches Monday

BERKELEY, CA — The city of Berkeley on Monday will implement a new parking management system that will use license plates as permits and allow permit holders to pay expenses online.

Permit applicants will be mailed letters that include a link code that lets them create an online account using a City of Berkeley portal, city officials said.

New permit holders will be able to use their portals to upload documents by Monday, according to the city. In the fall, residents will also be able to purchase one-day and 14-day temporary permits online.

In the future, residents will be able to renew and pay for permits through their online portals.

Additionally, anyone who gets a parking citation can now pay it on the City's website. The city said it would suspend deadlines for citations issued before this past Monday.

Effective Aug. 1, license plates will function as permits in designated residential neighborhoods, according to the city.

Drivers can access the city's new online portal to check whether they are in a residential permit neighborhood, and to see if their neighborhood qualifies for the program, according to the city.

"Mobilizing the entire organization to launch this requires changing past practices, integrating various technologies, setting up payment systems, training staff, care for public service, and aligning with numerous laws and council policies," police Chief Andrew Greenwood said in a news
release. "And, yet, we hope that what our community sees is a simple, straight-forward process."
