Cal Alum Andy Mannix Wins Pulitzer

The class of 2015 graduate was among nine with UC Berkeley ties honored by the Pulitzers

BERKELEY, CA — UC Berkeley alum Andy Mannix won a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of George Floyd’s murder by a Minneapolis police officer.

The class of 2015 graduate was among nine Cal students, alumni and faculty honored by the Pulitzers.

Mannix's report described the Minneapolis precinct out of which Floyd's killer, disgraced former officer Derek Chauvin, worked in as being known for rogue policing.

Mannix was among three alumni honored.

UC Berkeley law school graduate and current journalism lecturer Abbie VanSickle was a member of The Marshall Project team that was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for a year-long investigation of K-9 units that uncovered the involvement of police dogs in injuries including to officers and those not involved in crimes.

Michelle Pitcher (‘21), who was served on the project as an IRP research assistant and summer intern was also honored by the Pulitzers.

Stephen Hobbs (‘14), an investigative reporter at The Post and Courier in Charleston, South Carolina, was a finalist for Local Reporting for “Rising Waters,” a series on the impact of rising sea levels on the Charleston economy.

Barbara Harvey (’20), Alex Matthews (’20) and Yuriria Ávila (’21) were honored by the Pulitzers for their work a The New York Times page one compilation of coronavirus deaths that ran without art under the headline: “U.S. Deaths Near 100,000, An Incalculable Loss.”

The three also contributed to “Tracking the Coronavirus at U.S. Colleges and Universities.”

Chloe Reynolds (‘21) along with Harvey and Matthews were honored for additional coronavirus reporting in The Times for “Coronavirus in the U.S.: Latest Map and Case Count” and “Nearly One-Third of U.S. Coronavirus Deaths Are Linked to Nursing Homes.

Austin Ramzy (‘03) was credited for the Times’ victims front page story on the victims and for her role in the report: “Live Briefing: Coronavirus Death Toll Climbs in China, and a Lockdown Widens.”
