Cal Swimmers Win 2 More Medals at Rio Olympics

The Golden Bears have earned more gold and silver, and this pair will be swimming for Cal for years to come.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL — Cal swimmers, past and present, continue their winning ways at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Two more Bears have won medals. Ryan Murphy captured gold in the 100-meter backstroke while Kathleen Baker is wearing silver for the 100 backstroke.

Murphy missed a world record by just three-tenths of a second. He will also compete in the 200-meter backstroke. Prelims will be held Wednesday, with the final on Thursday. The two-time NCAA swimmer of the year will be a senior at Cal in the fall.

Baker's silver performance continues a medal streak for Cal in the backstroke. This is the fourth straight Olympics that a Bear has grabbed a medal in the women's backstroke. Missy Franklin took gold in 2012, while Natalie Coughlin won in 2008 and 2004.
