“Lifting the Lid: What Goes On in a Beehive”

Bees have been declared the most important living species on this planet!

Bees have been declared the most important living species on this planet. 70% of the world’s agriculture depends exclusively on bees. However, their populations are declining due intensive farming practices, mono-cropping, non-native pests and agricultural chemicals.

You are invited for a virtual personal hive tour led by Jan Spieth from the Mt. Diablo Beekeepers Association. This is a rare opportunity to observe, up close, the lives of apis mellifera, the western honey bee, regarded as one of the most important insects on our planet! Did you ever wonder about these fascinating insects as they collaborate in the colony in a way that is hard for us to comprehend? Did you know that the colony is a finely tuned machine where every bee has a job and that these jobs are strictly divided by caste? And that each caste also has biological differences, well suited to what he does?

Jan will give you an up-close look at her backyard hives and show you the construction, infrastructure and inner workings of a well-running bee hive. You will learn about pollen, honey, worker bees, drones and the Queen bee.
