Meet an "Amazing" Who Shines at All She Does
Irene Obera, 83, is the oldest woman to break 40 seconds for the 200 meters.

Irene Obera, 83, is as accomplished in the world of work as she is in the world of sports. She worked from 1958 to 1994 as an educator for the Berkeley Unified School District, and became Berkeley’s first female continuation school principal. Quite a feat!
In addition, Irene, who started running after receiving her teaching credential, ran in the 1960 and 1968 Olympic trials, making it to the semi-finals. Since then, Irene set the world record in the 200 meters, as she zoomed through each age division in Women’s 45 – 70, then the 100 meters in Women’s 50 – 65, and in 2014, became the oldest woman to break 40 seconds for the 200 meters.
As if that wasn’t enough, Irene, at 81, won the Women’s 100m dash, 80-84 year old age category, in 17.57 seconds, just short of her own world record for this age group of 16.81 seconds. Truly unstoppable!
