Nor-Cal Rapist, Former UC Berkeley Worker, Convicted

BERKELEY, CA — A man known as the Nor-Cal Rapist was convicted Wednesday by a Sacramento County jury of raping nine women in at least six counties between 1991 and 2006, prosecutors said.

Roy Waller, now 60, lived in Benicia and had worked for the University of California at Berkeley for 25 years before he was arrested about two years ago in Berkeley.

Police said Waller was linked by DNA to the DNA profile of the Nor-Cal Rapist.

"Nine victims waited for more than 20 years for this moment and it is only with the use of Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG) and the science of DNA that it has come," Sacramento County Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Grippi said in a statement. "This is their day."

Waller committed the crimes in Sonoma, Solano, Contra Costa, Yolo, Butte and Sacramento counties. The first ones occurred in Rohnert Park and Sonoma. The last was in Sacramento in 2006, law enforcement officials said after Waller was arrested.

Late at night, Waller entered homes and either overcame or bound women to commit the assaults.

He ransacked homes, took property, or took the victims to get cash from an ATM.

Waller was convicted on all 46 counts and enhancements against him, said Shelly Orio, spokeswoman for Sacramento County prosecutors.

Waller is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 18.
