Poll: Lawmakers Send Governor Bill to Protect Illegal Immigrants

The State Legislature sent Gov. Jerry Brown a bill Friday that would prohibit local law enforcement from holding arrestees at the request of federal immigration authorities. 

Known as the Trust Act, AB1081 by Tom Ammiano of San Francisco makes an exception for violent and serious criminals, but was opposed by the California State Sheriffs' Association. The bill's target is a program run by the United States Immigration and Custom Enforcement called Secure Communities, which has the stated goal of prioritizing "the removal of criminal aliens, those who pose a threat to public safety, and repeat immigration violators." 

Critics of Secure Communities argue that the policy enlists local law enforcement in a process that victimizes innocent people and erodes trust with immigrant communities. 

The bill passed the Assembly floor Friday on a 48-26 vote. 

According to the "Los Angeles Times," Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca plans to defy the Trust Act if it becomes law. What do you think local law enforcement should do if Governor Brown signs the bill into law?
