Two UC Berkeley Engineering Professors Die Days Apart

Karl Hedrick was a professor of mechanical engineering, while James Hunt was a professor of civil engineering.

BERKELEY, CA — UC Berkeley announced this week the loss of two Engineering professors.

Karl Hedrick was a professor of mechanical engineering and James Hunt was a professor of civil engineering.

Memorial services have not been announced.

Hedrick died on Feb. 22 after a long battle with lung cancer. He was 72.

The distinguished professor held the James Marshall Wells Academic Chair in mechanical engineering. He was best known for the development of nonlinear control theory and its applications to transportation, including automated highway systems and power train controls.

Hedrick graduated over 70 Ph.D. students.

Hunt died on Feb. 20 after a brief illness. He was 66.

The emeritus professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering was an expert in groundwater transport of organic contaminants.

He served on the faculty for 33 years.
