2 Injured After 6.4 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Northern California

FERNDALE, CA —At least two people have been injured after a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck northern California early Tuesday morning. The quake knocked out power to thousands, damaged roads and homes, and triggered dozens of aftershocks.

The quake hit 7.5 miles southwest of Ferndale at 2:34 am, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Power is out for over 70,000 customers, the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office said, adding that no tsunami is expected.

Two injuries have been confirmed, according to the sheriff's office, which said residents should only call 911 if there is an immediate emergency.

The sheriff's office said widespread damage has been reported to roads and homes throughout the county, particularly in the Eel River Valley. Residents were warned to be prepared for aftershocks and to check gas and water lines for damages and leaks.

State Route 211 at Fernbridge in Humboldt County has been shut down, according to Caltrans. The bridge is closed while it's inspected for safety.

A number of aftershocks ranging in severity from magnitude 2.5 to 4.6 have been reported in the area since, according to the USGS.

Pacific, Gas and Electric has initiated its emergency response plan.

"We hope everyone is safe and if you felt shaking or got an alert you took a protective action like Drop, Cover, and Hold On," the USGS wrote in a tweet.

Ferndale is located roughly 260 miles north of San Francisco.
