Average Lows in Three Bay Area Cities Were Highest on Record This Summer

Low temperatures were the highest on record in three local cities this summer, a National Weather Service meteorologist said Sunday. Meteorologist Charles Bell averaged the low temperatures for San Francisco, Santa Cruz and Monterey from June 1 to Aug. 30 and found the temperatures were the highest on record.

San Francisco’s average low temperature this summer was 57.7 degrees, more than a degree warmer than the record of 56.5 degrees set in 1985, Bell said. Monterey’s average low temperature this summer 55.5 degrees, up from 54.6 degrees in 1992, he said.

The average low in Santa Cruz this summer was 56.7 degrees, breaking the previous record of 56 degrees set last year, Bell said. He attributed part of the record temperatures to warmer summer sea surface temperatures, Bell said.
