The "Miracle on the Hudson" pilot and former Danville resident was nominated to serve as the nation's representative on an aviation council.

DANVILLE, CA — Former Danville resident C.B. “Sully” Sullenberger III — best known as the "Miracle on the Hudson" pilot — has been tapped by President Joe Biden for an ambassador-level position.

Biden nominated Sullenberger to serve as the U.S. representative to the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization. If confirmed by the Senate, Sullenberger would serve a three-year term alongside representatives from 35 other nations.

It was one of a slew of ambassador nominations the White House announced last week.

"Should I be confirmed for this important role, I will look forward to working together with other ICAO members to ensure the highest levels of safety in air transportation, which has been my priority throughout my career," he said on Twitter.

Sullenberger was a commercial pilot and former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot who was thrust into the national spotlight following his emergency plane landing dubbed the "Miracle on the Hudson" in 2009. Sullenberger was heralded for saving all lives aboard US Airways Flight 1549 after it struck a flock of geese and lost all engine power as it departed New York City's LaGuardia Airport en route to Charlotte, North Carolina.
