Blackhawk Museum To Open 'Into China' Gallery
The collection represents the art and culture of China through the centuries.

BLACKHAWK, CA — The Blackhawk Museum, best known for its automobile collection, is opening its new “Into China” gallery, presenting objects that offer a glimpse into the extraordinary wealth and artistic accomplishments of China through its dynasties.
The many objects displayed in the large gallery are modern replicas of famous pieces that, for the most part, could never be seen outside of China, according to museum officials. The First Emperor of China’s Terracotta Warriors and Chariots in the “Eternal World” section of the gallery will be presented, along with a complete set of bells from the Tomb of Marquis Yi, believed to be dated 433 BC. The bells, some very small, others enormous in size, comprise 64 separate Bianzhong bronze bells and are one of only three sets permitted to be reproduced, and believed to be the only set in the United States, according to museum officials.
There are some objects in the gallery that have no comparable precedents in China, such as a 24-foot-long Imperial Dragon, carved from one single piece of wood.

One of the most impressive items to see is an accurately scaled model of the Forbidden City that is 19 feet wide and 23 feet long. The wooden replica offers visitors a perspective into the lives of the Emperors of China.
The Dragon Throne is particularly eye-catching. The large ornate throne is covered in gold layers, which at the time represented the color of the Imperial Family. In Imperial times, only the members of the Imperial Family were allowed to wear yellow or own objects colored in yellow or gold, according to museum officials.

Complementing the Into China gallery is a Chinese-made Hongqi “Red Flag” limousine from
the Museum’s automobile gallery. The Reg Flag cars were hand-made expressly for the Chinese
government for use in transporting officials, dignitaries and foreign heads of state. The Blackhawk Museum was the first to legally import a car from China to the U.S., making it an extremely rare sight in America, according to museum officials.
Opening day for the Into China gallery takes place Jan. 25, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission to the Museum will be free during the event that will include a ribbon cutting, traditional Chinese performances and food.
