Community Mourns Loss Of Arlie Smith, Beloved ‘Costco Guy’
Smith, who was a greeter, battled Multiple Sclerosis and terminal bone cancer. He will be missed.

DANVILLE, CA — The Costco in Danville will never be the same without him. Arlie Smith, 48, known to most in Tri-Valley as the ‘Costco Guy,’ died around midnight on Monday, according to his family. The longtime Costco employee was known for his warm smile, fantastic sense of humor and his kind heart.
The San Ramon native battled Multiple Sclerosis and terminal bone cancer. When Smith was diagnosed with cancer in September 2015, he was told he had about two years left to live — so he made the most of it. Following Smith's terminal diagnosis, his loyal customers collected $2,500 so he and his wife, Shari, could take a trip to Laguna Beach together.
Smith continued to work while bravely battling cancer, and he was able to raise thousands of dollars for worthy causes, including UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland.
