Update: Danville Girl's Competition Ends in National Spelling Bee
Charlotte Wood Middle School sixth-grader, Shilpa Rao, correctly spelled "ingenue"in Round 2 and "izar" in Round 3, however, she did not make it to the semifinalist round.

Shilpa Rao competed in the National Spelling Bee on Wednesday and Thursday, with a pool of 273 other youngsters. She didn't make it to the semifinal round of the bee, which will continue Friday in Washington D.C.
She correctly spelled "ingenue" (definition: a naive girl or young woman) in round 2, in which 245 contestants got their words right. And in round 3, she spelled "izar" correctly (definition:Â a voluminous cotton outer garment traditionally worn by Muslim women of northern Africa and the Middle East).
At the end of round 3 the contestants were awarded points and 49 semifinalists were selected to compete Friday. Total points for each contestant have not yet been released.

Results for Round 1, in which contestants spelled 50 words on a computer, have not yet been released.
Shilpa, the daughter of Danville's Satish and Suchitra Rao, won the Charlotte Wood Middle School spelling bee in January and the Contra Costa County bee in March.
