Danville Officer Shoots Man Who Pulled Knife On Cop

The man was reportedly throwing rocks at cars prior to the altercation with the police officer.

DANVILLE, CA — A Danville police officer fired his gun Thursday at a man who pulled a knife on the officer after hurling rocks at cars, officials said.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was hospitalized and is being treated, according to police and the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District.

The Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department and the county's District Attorney's Office are continuing to investigate the incident, which began at 11:48 a.m. when police dispatch received several calls from motorists regarding an individual throwing rocks off the Sycamore Valley Road overpass.

Town spokesperson Geoff Gillette said Thursday evening that a Danville police officer arrived at the scene and contacted the individual in the area of Sycamore Valley Road and Camino Ramon, just east of the freeway. The officer approached the man and attempted to speak with him. The man then pulled out a folding knife and then opened it. The officer ordered him to drop the knife several times. The man then approached the officer, who then discharged his weapon, striking the man once.

Danville police asked the public to avoid the area of Sycamore Valley Road between Brookside Drive and San Ramon Valley Boulevard for a few hours on Thursday afternoon amid road closures. The northbound Interstate Highway 680 offramp at Sycamore Valley Road was also been closed due to police activity, according to the California Highway Patrol.
