Danville Teen Awarded Junior Driver of the Year for Sanzaru Games Karting Championship 2016
San Ramon Valley High Freshman Colin Mullan just completed his ninth season of racing.
From Sanzaru Games Karting: In December of 2016, Danville resident Colin Mullan received top honors for winning the Junior Rotax class for the 2016 season of the Sanzaru Games Karting Championship at Sonoma Raceway. The San Ramon Valley High freshman was also awarded the Junior Driver of the Year for his patience, strategy, and consistency of performance to finish up front this past season.
After completing his ninth season of racing, including four seasons in karts with two championship wins, Colin at age 14 will move to the Formula Car Challenge, presented by Goodyear with World Speed Motorsports for 2017. This will be Colin's rookie season in cars and he will be racing in the FormulaSPEED class.
“My cumulative racing experience this past year has really helped me to prepare for the move to FormulaSPEED next year. In addition to racing karts, I completed a three-day Formula car Skip Barber Racing School at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, as well as several driving events in my Mazda Spec Miata with coaching from TFB Performance and Mark Drennan,” said Colin Mullan. “I’m very excited to be moving into cars. Experiencing downforce, and plenty of power is amazing.”

"We met Colin when he received one of the coveted invitations to the annual WSM Rising Star Award test," noted World Speed Motorsports President Telo Stewart. "This test is unlike any other test we have during the season. These hand picked drivers are run through a gauntlet of on-track and off-track activities that allow us to assess their level of professionalism. There are journalists and important series partners on hand, and this adds an additional amount of pressure. Colin's performance was exceptional throughout the test day, and we are very proud to have him join World Speed Motorsports for the 2017 season."
In addition to participating in seven race weekends in the Formula Car Challenge, Colin plans to compete in several Teen Mazda Challenge races in his Spec Miata. Already with experience on track at Sonoma Raceway, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and Thunderhill Raceway Park, Colin is learning the craft of racing both sports cars and formula cars.
