Faith Congregations Spring Clean for Clothing to Assist Community

Community joins together to help address a shortage of men's clothing for Contra Costa neighbors in need.

Members of congregations from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the San Ramon Valley and San Ramon Valley United Methodist Church joined forces to sponsor a men’s clothing drive for White Pony Express in May 2021. White Pony Express is a nonprofit organization based in Pleasant Hill that distributes new and like-new clothing through donations to its General Store in Pleasant Hill. While donations of women’s clothing are abundant, the request came from White Pony Express to help address a shortage of men’s clothing for Contra Costa neighbors in need.

The two-hour donation drop-off event was a steady flow of cars through the parking lot at the Danville Latter-day Saint chapel while a group of 18 volunteers worked quickly to fold and sort clothing. Approximately 5,000 lbs of clothing filled a moving truck that was delivered to White Pony Express.

“Even though it was hard work, everyone had a wonderful time working together,” said volunteer Kristina Buskirk, member of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “We saw extraordinary generosity from the community, and it felt good to come together with a spirit of brother and sisterhood after being disconnected for so long from COVID-19.”
