Man Accused Of Starting Fire At Black Diamond Mines Regional Park

Police praised an East Bay Regional Park District Ranger's quick thinking, which helped prevent the spread of a potentially large fire.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — A man accused of arson was arrested Tuesday after a vegetation fire erupted at the Black Diamond Mines Regional Park, according to the East Bay Regional Park District Police Department.

Police said an East Bay Regional Park District Ranger saw the man near the fire and called for help from the Contra Costa County Fire Department to extinguish the blaze.

“The Ranger witnessed a suspect squirting lighter fluid onto a burning brush fire,” police said in a statement.

Police said the fire burned a small section of vegetation and fencing. No one was injured and no structures were threatened by the flames.

The man, identified as 38-year-old Jesus Israel Reyes-Ambriz, was arrested on suspicion of arson and booked into the Martinez Detention Facility. He is being held on $75,000 bail.
