2 Dead, 4 Injured In Fiery Yolo County Crash: CHP

An SUV and a box truck became engulfed in fire in the collision on I-5 near County Road 95.

YOLO COUNTY, CA — Two people died and four others were injured in a fiery Northern California crash early Friday morning north of Woodland, according to the California Highway Patrol. Reports about the collision on northbound Interstate 5, south of County Road 95 in a rural area near Zamora, started coming in at 12:17 a.m., CHP Woodland Area Spokesman Rodney Fitzhugh said.

According to CHP's preliminary investigation, a 28-year-old Southern California man had stopped his 2019 International box truck on the right shoulder and as he was pulling away from the shoulder to get back onto the freeway, a collision occurred between his truck and a 2006 Ford SUV driven by a 58-year-old man also from Southern California.

"As a result of this collision both vehicles became engulfed in fire," Fitzhugh said. "Two people were unable to exit the Ford and succumbed to the injuries they sustained in this collision."

Two other passengers, 55-year-old Yolanda Favela and 11-year-old Marisol Favela, also of Littlerock in Los Angeles County, suffered major injuries, as well.

All three were rushed to UC Davis Medical Center, Fitzhugh said.

The Yolo County Sheriff-Coroner's Office was still working early Friday afternoon to confirm the identities of the two passengers who died, a staff member told Patch.

The truck driver, Luis Salas, of Pacoima in Los Angeles County, escaped with minor injuries that did not require hospitalization, according to Fitzhugh.

"It is not believed alcohol and/or drugs are a factor in this collision," Fitzhugh said. "If anyone has information regarding this collision they are asked to contact the California Highway Patrol Woodland Area at 530-662-4685."
