Advisory: 5th Street Road Closure

Both directions of 5th St. between G St. and I St. are temporarily closed due to a roadway hazard. Detours have been put in place to re-direct traffic. We are asking motorists to avoid this area until later this evening when the roadway hazard can be cleared.

Union Pacific and Cal Northern Railroad have experienced a down utility pole at Fifth Street, leaving an unsafe condition.  The winds broke a large branch of a tree behind Rower Place that struck the railroad’s utility line.  The impact snapped the pole at the Dairy Queen (909 Fifth).  When Rail America crews tried to right the pole it seemed to destabilize the next pole south of the DQ.  Not wanting create additional issues, they stopped work, propped the snapped pole up and declared their emergency.  They have closed Fifth Street until the condition is resolved.

Police was on scene and set up their changeable message sign.
