California State Fair Opens Today at Cal Expo: Will You Attend?

Are you going? Know any Davis exhibitors or performers?

Just in time for the dog days of summer, the California State Fair opens today at Cal Expo.

That means its time for deep-fried fair food, carnival rides, livestock and more. Gates open at 11 a.m. today.

Fair times are:

  • Monday - Thursday: 11 a.m. - 10 p.m.
  • Friday - Sunday: 10 a.m. - 10 p.m.

You can do what I do to beat the heat and check out the exhibit halls during the day. My favorite is the counties exhibits. There's a "Toytopia" exhibit, with toys that sound like fun. There's also the food, of course:

Featuring exotic foods from around the world, traditional favorites, with plenty of fresh and nutritious alternatives for the health-conscious, the Fair has something for everyone. Corn dogs, maple bacon sundaes, funnel cakes, alligator, crickets or scorpions. Fresh, frozen or fried.

There are also free concerts. It's not that big of a lineup, in my opinion, compared to previous years that included (potentially interesting) acts like M.C. Hammer, Jessica Simpson and Ozomatli. This year's acts include Rick Springfield on July 19, "American Idol" winner Scotty McCreery on July 21, Hot Chelle Rae on July 24 and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts on July 27.

Standard ticket prices are:

  • General Admission                          $12
  • Senior Admission (Ages 62+)           $10
  • Youth Admission (Ages 5-12)           $8
  • Child Admission (Ages 0-4)              FREE

The fair runs through July 29.

Are you going to the fair this year? Why or why not? Do you know of any Davisites who are exhibiting artwork or displays?
