Drunk Driver Kills Two Passengers Near Woodland

A Redwood City man driving under the influence of alcohol collided with a tree off State Route 16 near Woodland on Monday, killing a woman and teenage boy, authorities said.

Woodland California Highway Patrol officers responded to a single car traffic collision on State Route 16 just east of County Road 40 in Yolo County around 4:45 p.m.

A westbound 2001 Toyota Tacoma ran off the road for apparently unknown reasons, rolled down a steep embankment approximately 75 feet and hit a tree, according to CHP officials.

A 39-year-old woman from Redwood City and male youth approximately 14 years of age were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities are still being confirmed by Yolo County Coroner’s Office.

The driver, Reyes Barajas, 46, was extricated from the truck and flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital by air ambulance. Authorities said prior to being transported, Barajas was showing signs of alcohol intoxication.

Santa Rosa area CHP officers went to the hospital and determined that Barajas had been driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the traffic collision, authorities said.

Barajas was arrested on two felony counts of driving while under the influence, causing injury or death, and could face charges of gross vehicular manslaughter.
