Tornado, Snow, Freezing Temps: Weird Weather Around California

From a tornado in Davis to early snow in Lake Tahoe to record-low temperatures near San Diego, weird weather hit California this weekend.

DAVIS, CA — Cities around California experienced a spate of weird weather this weekend, starting most dramatically with a tornado that briefly touched down outside Davis on Saturday.

The tornado touched down at 6:41 p.m., according to the National Weather Service — shortly after a tornado warning had been issued for Yolo and Solano Counties. The tornado caused no damage and the warning was canceled by 7:07 p.m., but not before Twitter was flooded with eyewitness footage of the storm.

The Davis area bore the brunt of the weekend's weird weather — earlier Saturday, a hailstorm pummeled the city, CNN reported. And on Sunday morning, record-low temperatures were set in Sacramento, where the 46-degree weather broke a previous record of 47 set on that date in 2007.

Further east and up in the mountains, an early snowfall hit Lake Tahoe amid unseasonably cold temperatures. Monday's high in South Lake Tahoe was just 43 degrees, with a low of 28 — down from the upper 80s last week.

Even in Southern California, a milder cold snap could be felt. Record low temperatures were recorded on Sunday at Paso Robles Airport in San Luis Obispo County, where 37-degree temperatures broke the old record of 41 set in 1971, according to the National Weather Service.

And as far south as San Diego County, record-low maximum temperatures were set in Vista and El Cajon on Sunday, the National Weather Service reported. At least there wasn't any snow.
