Artisan Ice Cream Shop 'Salt & Straw' Opens In Tri-Valley

This is the first East Bay scoop shop for the business, with a loyal fan-following for such promos as its "Eat Your Flowers" menu.

SAN RAMON, CA — Salt & Straw, a West Coast-based artisan ice cream company known for its seasonal, quirky flavors, expands to the East Bay with a shop opening today in San Ramon's City Center Bishop Ranch.

Launched in 2011 as a family business by cousins in Portland, OR, Salt & Straw lures loyal fans with its small-batch, made-from-scratch ice cream and its revolving flavor menu that changes every four to six weeks.

“Opening up in San Ramon is a dream come true," said Tyler Malek, who started the company with his cousin, Kim. "The energy and momentum around City Center Bishop Ranch has been ramping up for a few years now."

On the menu at the San Ramon store — the first in the East Bay and the 26th company-wide —will be the specialty "Freckled Mint TCHO-colate Chip," featuring San Francisco’s craft chocolate, and the "Eat Your Flowers" selections.

Celebrating spring and flowering gardens at this newest Salt & Straw is this season's "Eat Your Flowers" menu featuring such exotic treats as: "Rhubarb Crumble w/ Toasted Anise"; "Wildflower Honey w/ Ricotta Walnut Lace Cookies"; "Jasmine Milk Tea w/ Chocolate Almonds" (starring San Francisco’s Red Blossom Tea Co.); and "Mathilde's Hibiscus & Coconut Sherbet."

"Our 'Eat Your Flowers' ice creams represent this vitality, rejuvenation of the senses, and consumption of nature through the use of vivid flowers, bright fruits and potent aromatics that draw us outside, no matter the forecast," the company said.

Want to check it out? Head to Bishop Ranch City Center at 6000 Bollinger Canyon Road. Hours are Sundays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. - 10 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Other SF Bay Area locales are in San Francisco, Burlingame, Oakland, Palo Alto and at Valley Fair in San Jose. California shops also are in the Los Angeles, San Diego and Orange County regions.
