Dublin Schools Superintendent Approved
Chris Funk may begin working for the school district as soon as next month. Here's what you need to know about his contract.

DUBLIN, CA — The Dublin Unified School District board of trustees on Tuesday unanimously approved the contract of incoming Superintendent Chris Funk.
The approval brings an end to a nearly two-year search for a new superintendent. The past two years have been turbulent for the school district; Funk will be the district's fifth superintendent since 2019.
Funk is slated to begin July 1 and will come to Dublin from San Jose's East Side Union High School District, where he served as superintendent. Dublin's school district announced last week that Funk, who has a 30-year career in public education, was chosen as its top candidate and expected him to be approved by the board, pending a background check and contract negotiations.

Funk is authorized to begin work with the school district as a consultant starting in June and would earn about $1,500 per day. Funk's contract is scheduled to end June 2024.
He will start at the bottom of a four-step salary schedule and can earn up to $344,500 next school year as chief of the 12-school, 13,000-student district. Funk will be paid monthly based on the number of days he works, and he is not entitled to vacation days outside of the 225-day school year, according to his contract.

His salary could advance to $353,000, $362,000 and $371,000 in subsequent years as long as he receives a satisfactory written evaluation.
Funk's contract also provides that the district will pay his membership dues for the Association of California School Administrators, California School Boards Association or other organizations that further his professional development or community involvement.
The board will discuss Funk's performance on an "as-needed basis," according to the contract. That includes a verbal midyear discussion and annual written and oral evaluations. These conversations will take place behind closed doors, not in the public portion of board meetings.
The search for a new superintendent began with the abrupt resignation of Leslie Boozer in March 2019. Matt Campbell, an assistant superintendent, briefly served as schools chief before Dave Marken was tapped to serve as an interim superintendent.
Marken surprised the schools community by announcing his resignation in a June 2020 board meeting. "If you find yourself in a situation where your bosses don't trust you, and you don't trust your boss, you should no longer work for your boss anymore," he said at the time.
Interim Superintendent Daniel Moirao has helmed the district since last summer.
