Fallen Dublin Deputy Remembered During Annual Tree Lighting

The memorial pays homage to fallen Deputy John Monego, who was killed in the line of duty in Dublin on December 12, 1998.

DUBLIN, CA — Dublin Police Services will hold its annual tree lighting ceremony Saturday, Dec. 7. at 6 p.m.. Held at the Dublin Police Services lobby, the public event will be bittersweet.

The memorial ceremony pays homage to fallen Deputy John Monego, who was killed in the line of duty on December 12, 1998 while responding to a robbery in Dublin.

As the first law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty in Dublin, Monego will never be forgotten. The holiday memorial has become an annual city tradition.

Monego had just finished his regular shift and was working overtime to earn extra cash for Christmas the night he was killed. Three suspects were arrested for the robbery and murder. The shooter, Ruben Vasquez, was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Monego had been an officer for nine years and worked in Dublin for just eight months when he was slain. The 33-year-old deputy left behind a wife, Tammy, and son, Dominic, who was just 18 months old at the time.

The December 7 tree lighting memorial is free and open to the community; no RSVP is necessary. Dublin Police Services is located at 100 Civic Plaza.
