Quarry Lane School 5th grader Finishes Third in State Geographic Bee

Rhea Mitr was the highest finishing girl in the National Geographic California State Bee in 25 years.

Every year the state holds its annual National Geographic California State Bee in Sacramento and for the past 25 years the top three finishers have always been boys.

But thanks to Dublin girl, that streak came to an end on Saturday.

Rhea Mitr, a 5th grader at Quarry Lane School, finished in third place in the bee, which was the highest finish for a girl in a quarter century, according to Steven Cunha who presided over the bee.

Finishing in the top three wasn't easy. Mitr was one of 29 contestants to finish with a perfect score in the preliminary round. Then after about 20 tie-breaker rounds, Mitr advanced to the final 10.

Mitr missed two questions, which put her in a tie with another contestant for third. Mitr then answered correctly another seven rounds of tie-breaker questions to secure third place.

For the accomplishment, Mitr received a certificate, the complete National Geographic set of videos and magazines for the last two decades and a $50 check.
