Authorities ID Passenger Hit, Killed On US 101 In Santa Rosa

A suspected DUI driver and his passenger were running from the scene of a crash when the passenger was fatally struck, according to CHP.

SANTA ROSA, CA — A man who died when he was struck by a car on northbound U.S. Highway 101 Monday night has been identified as Ascari Farias Tapia, 24, of Santa Rosa, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office.

Tapia was a passenger in an Infiniti SUV that collided with a motorcycle on the highway around 11 p.m.

When the Infiniti driver, Juan Padilla-Lopez, 33, of Santa Rosa, and Tapia left the Infiniti, Tapia was struck by a Toyota Land Cruiser driven by a Ukiah woman, according to the California Highway Patrol. He died at the scene.

Padilla-Lopez was found at a gas station on Steele Lane and he was arrested on suspicion of DUI and hit-and-run.

He appeared in Sonoma County Superior Court Wednesday, but he was released from the Sonoma County Jail after the Sonoma County District Attorney's office asked for 30 more days to investigate the fatal collision.

His next court date is Sept. 13.
