Pipe Bomb Prompts Evacuations At Sonoma County Beach

The finding prompted a brief evacuation of the beach.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA -- A pipe bomb prompted an evacuation Saturday of a Sonoma County beach. Sonoma County Sheriff's officials said the device was found at Monte Rio Beach around 11 a.m, prompting a 1.5 hour evacuation of the area.

The bomb squad responded to the scene and rendered the bomb safe, according to sheriff's officials. The beach re-opened around 12:30 p.m.

Monte Rio Beach is the largest public beach on the lower Russian River, east of the Monte Rio Bridge and known locally as Big Rocky Beach.
